How to Pick the Perfect Valentine’s Flowers
There’s a lot of pressure riding on this choice. Will she be happy when she walks in the door, or will she think, “Oh. Same as last year” and fake a smile? Maybe it’s your first Valentine’s Day together and you want to really impress, or maybe you’ve got a tight budget but you want to make her feel special anyway. Don’t sweat: the Academy Florist How To Pick the Perfect Valentine’s Flowers Guide is here to help!
-Think about what she likes. Don’t know her favourite flowers? That’s okay. What colours does she like? What’s her design aesthetic? Choose something that you could see fitting right in at her house.
-Remember the special moments you’ve celebrated together, and tie them in: request some of the flowers that were in her wedding bouquet, or blooms that will remind her of the best vacation you’ve taken together.
-Is she a DIY kind of girl? She might like a bouquet of fresh flowers more than an arrangement, so that she can put it together herself. We’ve got lots of fresh flowers in-store just waiting for you!
-Create a luxury hotel-like experience right at home. A few fresh tulips on the bedside table, an eye-catching orchid on the dining room table, and rose petals waiting for a hot bubble bath. Who says you need to go out on Valentine’s Day?
-Go big: paired with wine and chocolates, a dramatic floral arrangement in jewel tones will stun her. Bright fuchsias, vibrant greens, and deep reds are romantic and luxurious—the perfect way to spoil the love of your life!
-If you’re looking for flowers to finish off the perfect gift that you’ve got, then we’ve got you covered. Tie a single rose into the bow on your gift wrap, top your fancy dessert with a fresh hydrangea bloom, or pick up some rose petals for the bed.
-On a tight budget? That’s okay. First, choose to deliver your flowers in person—she’ll love the personal touch. Consider one long-stemmed rose (the ultimate in romance!), one perfect bloom floating in a glass vase, or a single stem of exotic orchids.
-When in doubt, go for something unique. Almost everyone likes roses, but if you’re feeling a little on the fence, then why not try an arrangement that incorporates some of her favourite colours or flowers and is perfectly designed by our floral designers?
-Still need help? Come into a store and talk to one of our designers. We’ll show you what’s fresh in the cooler and maybe spark your interest. We’ve also got a wide array of vases and accents to finish it off perfectly!
Valentine’s Is for the Guys, Too!
Although it’s traditionally a day for the men to remember, why not spoil your man with something special on Valentine’s Day? Men love flowers and plants, yet only a third of women buy their husbands floral gifts for Valentine’s Day, and we think that number should go up! Here are some ideas for you:
-Birds of Paradise. Paired with orange carnations and purple statice, the arrangement will pack major visual punch without looking feminine.
-Bright roses in a clean, contemporary vase with bold foliage—it looks great on a desk or a meeting room!
-Bold, modern looking blooms and plants, like dendrobium orchids, cacti, or bamboo, are a great choice (and will probably distract their attention, too!).
Here are some of our Academy Florist favourites!

Don’t forget – a suggestive notecard along with the flowers will go a long way in making him more excited about the delivery.
More than Just Roses
There’s a reason why lovers around the world choose roses to send to the ones they cherish: widely grown for their beauty and fragrance, roses symbolize love and all that accompanies it. Poets have long idolized them with romantic fantasy, contributing to the meaning now associated with roses and Valentine’s Day: A red rose is said to symbolize passionate, true love while a blue rose remembers love at first sight. But when it comes to Valentine’s Day, there’s more than just roses to say you’re in love! Here are some of our favourite flowers and their romantic meanings…
Tulips: Choose red to make a declaration of love, pink to show you care, or yellow to show how hopelessly in love you are.
Orchids: Tell your love she’s a delicate beauty with a potted orchid or stunning bouquet.
Queen Anne’s Lace: Delicate femininity goes hand-in-hand with this ethereal bloom.
Yellow Chrysanthemum: Are you a secret admirer? This is the perfect choice for you!
Daisy: Innocence goes hand-in-hand with daisies.
Forget-me-not: Remember me forever.
Iris: Is she your muse? A spring flower, irises speak of inspiration.
Larkspur: With it’s tall shape and unique blooms, larkspur symbolizes a beautiful spirit.
Sunflower: Pure and simple, adoration!
Aster: Daintiness, love, and trust are all tied up with asters.
Pink carnations: Perfect for your mother or child, pink carnations reflect a mother’s love.
Gardenia: Gardenias tell people they are lovely, and whisper of secret, sweet love.
Valentine’s Day is more than just roses… but, we sure do love them!
